Since 1995, when Amazon.com was launched, it utilized sales associates who did not actually work directly for the company, but who had websites of their own and on those websites they featured links which would take a perspective buyer back to the Amazon website with one click. These associates (also called affiliates) would earn a commission if their referral resulted in a sale for Amazon. So there you have it; a brief explanation of what an affiliate is.

Now let us move on to understand what is meant by affiliate marketing plr. We understand affiliates are those who earn a commission by referring people to the web site of another company or entity. Marketing is fairly self explanatory; it is a way of attracting the maximum amount of people and getting them to purchase the maximum amount of a product. So what is PLR?

Private label rights are similar to but not exactly like a copyright. Let us say that I have written an article about widgets, in fact I have written 50 articles about widgets. I want to sell these articles and I do not care if I get writers credits or not; I am giving permission for anyone to purchase the articles for a fee and publish them under their own name.

Let’s say that I have created a website wherein I have elected to sell widgets. I want to get the word out about my website, and I tell anyone who wants to be an affiliate and join my program that I will pay them a commission of 50% on each referral that results in a sale. My affiliates then create their own websites, and a series of networks, in which they talk about the health benefits of widgets, the wonderful world of widgets, and how widgets can change your life. At the end of the website, they will insert a hyperlink, which directs the person using the affiliate web sites back to my website, at which point they buy my products. The result of all of this is an affiliate marketing program.

The idea of revenue sharing, in which a commission is paid for all referred business, is an idea that was conceived before the advent of affiliate marketing, and the Internet itself.

The World Wide Web was launched in November 1994. The adoption of this revenue sharing concept by e-commerce, which consists of the buying and selling of products and services over the Internet, occurred almost four years later.

It is a widely accepted fact that Cybererotica was among the early instigators of affiliate marketing with the introduction of a cost per click program, which relates to the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet publishers for a single click on its advertisement that brings one visitor to its website.

In 1994, CDNOW launched its BuyWeb program in which it represented the first non-adult website to introduce the concept of an affiliate or associate program with its idea of click-through purchasing, where Click-through rate or CTR is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign.

In this way, the CTR is derived from the number of users who clicked on a web page ad divided by the number of times the ad was presented, called impressions. For example, if an ad was presented 100 times and one person clicked on it, then the CTR would be 1 percent.

CDNOW realised websites that had a bias towards music could list albums on their pages that their visitors would be able to purchase. Such websites could also offer the visitor a portal that would direct them to CDNOW in order to make their purchases.

This idea of remote purchasing was first muted by music label Geffen Records in 1994 who wanted to sell its artists’ CDs directly from its website, but did not want to get directly involved itself. They asked CDNOW to implement a system in which CDNOW would handle the order processing. In this way, CDNOW could connect directly the artist on its website to Geffen’s website. Such a system would avoid the CDNOW home page and go directly to the artist’s music page.

Amazon launched its own system in 1996. This enabled an individual who subscribed to the programme to either place a banner or text link on their website, or link directly to the Amazon home page. With this system, whenever a visitor clicked on the associate’s website, they were redirected through to Amazon. Should they make a purchase, the associate would receive payment in the form of a commission.

The first merchant to make an affiliate program available to those who signed-up was, in fact, not Amazon. However, their programme was the first to become widely accepted. Furthermore, it went on to act as a yardstick for other programmes.

Its pre-eminence was further established in February 2000 when Amazon announced that it had been granted a patent relating to all the essential components of an affiliate programme. The patent application was presented in June 1997, at a time when affiliate programmes had only just established a presence on the internet.

I have a long-standing background in business and in information technology and have focused much of my efforts on internet software development since the very early days when the internet first went public back in 1994. Since 1994, I have learned the in’s and out’s of website development. I have personally built more than 300 websites during that time. Each of those sites progressively grew more complex and utilised all the latest cutting edge of technologies of their time.

I have built many websites that were designed for e-commerce, but with all the technical knowledge, I was missing one key ingredient to ensure even greater success of those websites: monetization.

Sure, the websites made money from the sales of their own products and services, but normally the conversion rate of vistors to customers is a fairly low percentage. On average, any given site would be elated to convert a mere 3% of their traffic. There are many methods employed to increase the conversion rates, but that still leaves a massive percentage of untapped potential in the traffic that was on the site in the first place–and right now traffic is an extremely precious commodity in the on-line world. We need to leverage existing traffic to generate even more revenue. And if there isn’t enough traffic, generate more (I will discuss traffic generation in a future article, as it is extremely important)!

Monetization, in its simplest form, means to generate revenue from something. When we are talking about websites, this means leveraging your existing traffic to provide income from a revenue stream outside of your primary product or service. Some common examples of monetisation include: direct paid advertising, network advertising and affiliate marketing.

Direct paid advertising – Advertisers pay you directly for placement of their ads on your website.

Network advertising – An aggregator of advertisers allows you to display advertisements from their network of advertisers. Each click on those displayed advertisements makes you money (PPC, or Pay per click), or they may pay per 1000 impressions of advertisements (PPM). Google AdSense is one such program and is very popular.

Affiliate marketing – Agreements with individual companies that pay you commissions for any sales that originated from a link on your website, through the use of tracking codes or referral ids embedded into those links. A few well-known companies who offer aggregated affiliate programs are: Clickbank and  Commission Junction. There are also individual companies who have their own private affiliate programs (who actually service website owners), such as: Traffic Swarm, Article Marketer, AWeber and many others.

Think of these as additional revenue streams generated by your existing website visitors whether or not they choose to buy your products or services. They give you a number of different opportunities to generate revenue from every single website visitor. Obviously not every visitor will take actions that will generate income for you, but it certainly increases the chances that they will.

Anyone can build a website and make money online. A complete novice can setup a complete website, with step by step instructions, in a matter of a few short hours. In the old days, when the internet was just getting off the ground, it was a general rule that only technical people could create and manage a website. Making money as an affiliate means promoting services or products on the Internet.
