Are you an affiliate? Or do you want to make to make money online as an affiliate? If that sounds like you, I’m going to make it worth your while to read the whole of this short article. “How?”, you ask. Well to put it bluntly, unless you are choosing the right affiliate programs (and products) to promote, you’re going to struggle to make any money online.
Go Where The Money Is….
First off lets not waste any time trying to crack small unproven niches. We want to go where the big boys (and girls) are already raking in the cash. So how do we find them? Simple, go to Amazon, eBay, internet forums, yahoo answers, and any other similar sites and see what is selling. In places like Amazon and eBay look for top sellers, best sellers, or categories with many products and reviews. See what is selling.
Your finding a market. Not just any market, but a proven market, one which already has ravenous buyers, who will happily give there money away ‘hand over fist’ to get what they want. These are the people we are after.
Let’s take an example. The health and wellbeing niche. It’s a huge market with lots of products in a range of categories, e.g. weight loss, fitness, alternative medicine etc. Each of these can be subdivided further, e.g. how to lose 10 pounds, get a six pack, stop smoking ect – it’s massive. Use the popularity and market size to get an idea of what’s selling and what people want, because that’s what you’re going to give them, and they’ll pay you for the trouble.
Use internet forums and places such as yahoo answers to find out popular topics and find out their problems. Hopefully they should correlate well with the niches we uncovered previously.
Find An An Affiliate Program (and Product) That Pays…
Next up, you want to find affiliate products that you can promote that directly target the market you have just uncovered. You can find digital products at clickbank.com, paydotcom.com and physical products from cj.com and linkshare.com. All of these offer revenue sharing or affiliate relationships with vendors.
You want to find a program/product that pays you a high commission – you’re doing all the work after all. I always look for over 50% on digital products, sometimes you’ll be able to get up to 75% commission, so you actually make more per sale than the vendor! On physical products look for over 10%.
Ideally the affiliate program/products should provide you with secure links so you can avoid affiliate link theft, and if possible have link tracking (if not use a program such as Adtrackz to track your links).
The vendor should also have a good sales process, well written (professional) salesletters, an easy way to contact customer support and excellent customer support. Also see if they have an automated follow up system in place, as you can get paid on sales made at a later date if a proper autoresponder/newsletter system is in place.
Another thing to look out for is if you can get paid by referring other affiliates. Some vendors will offer you a commission on all sales made by affiliates you refer, or have products for their affiliates with which you can earn commission on (as well as the normal products).
Here are two case studies from the health niche to demonstrate some of the points we’ve discussed:
Case Study 1: Joe Bucks: jobucks.info
JoeBucks.info sell a range of health products, primarily supplements. They have an excellent system for affiliates, providing a range of creatives such as banners and also give their affiliates a free website for each product. They provide detailed conversion tracking reports and their websites all have great marketing systems and copy in place to maximise sales. Plus a whole lot more that I don’t have space to mention.
JoeBucks.info also pay 50% commission on all orders and also 50% commission on re-orders made by customers at a later date, allowing you to earn month after month if the customer keeps ordering. Another huge benefit is that you can get paid by referring other affiliates, you make a commission of 5% of any sales they refer.
Health supplements are a booming marketing and it looks like it will continue for a long while, so this would be one affiliate program definitely worth joining.
Case Study 2: VIP Health Secrets: viphealthsecrets.com/affiliates.html
VIPHealthSecrets.com is another affiliate program worth joining. They sell a growing range of health related information products. The salesletters appear well written and professionally done and they offer a free membership with lots of health reports for prospects to download, then they upsell prospects to their special reports.
They pay 75% commission on all sales which is at the top end of commission scales. As they sell a range of products you have the potential to earn not just on one sale, but on multiple sales. They currently use a secure system to protect your affiliate links, and provide a lot of affiliate promotional tools, such as viral reports, articles and banners. They also give affiliates a free website which promotes all their products as well as educating the visitors.
One of this best things about the viphealthsecrets.com is the training resources provided to help you earn commission. They give a range of free reports which are specially designed to help you maximise your affiliate commission. Another benefit is that you can get paid for referring other affiliates, as they sell an affiliate marketing product to new affiliates and you’ll get commission on that as well as the health products.
These two affiliate programs would link in well together. As you could promote the supplements from Joe Bucks and the information products from viphealthsecrets.com and you’d have a great combination.
Strike While The Iron Is Hot…
If you’ve got this far you’ve done really well, and hopefully you’ll have learn a thing or two as well. If you only a a few things from this article, remember go where the money is, give people what they want and spend some time choosing carefully affiliate programs/products that pay. So get out there while this information is hot in your mind, and start your path to affiliate marketing profits.

In the internet world, instead of two companies merging, they form a joint venture. The Commonwealth Alliance Program (CAP), businesses reported that strategic alliances (Joint Ventures) accounted for 25% of all revenues in 2005, $40 trillion dollars. “This figure has been steadily growing over the past years as more solopreneurs and Work At Home Parents (WAHPs) decide to unite to augment their revenue in the highly competitive global environment.” Joint Venture A Joint Venture is defined differently by various online business communities. A small business owner can engage in a Joint venture to build their opt-in list, increase profits, increase hits, and expand exposure. An example is a venture where a content rich, 10 000 page pet web site affiliating for a company selling products to pet owners. The content rich site ranks high, is optimized, is listed on thousands of search engines, and has its own list of repeat users. All they need is a product to sell. Good Joint Ventures have created fortunes. They bring together products and services, media, and resources to reduce the time needed to promote and market a product or service. There are four players in the JV world, each must work with the others, each is of equal importance. The Customer List It can take a long time to find a list owner who will sell a new product. Most list owners sell products that offer a proven value for their members. The product owner cannot join commission junction and hope they will make millions. The product owner need to find lists with a narrow niche that really needs their product. This can be hard, as many list owners mistakenly try to be everything to everyone. This increases their audience but reduces. These list owners often brag about their hits and their newsletter mailing list size. Instead, they should be talking about ROI, return on investment, click through vs buy rates, and demographics. A product can be a home training course, a book, or even a POD cast coaching seminar series. It does not need to be something someone would The Product There are millions of products available on the web. Some are fantastic, unfortunately, they will never make their creator rich because they are difficult to market. No list owner wants another e-book or e-course, unless it will guarantee success. No list owner wants a product from a company so small that they may provide poor customer service, or go out of business. This reflects badly on the niche list and community. This is why many small business owners work with click bank, commission junction, Pro Stores, and other sites that offer credibility as well as affiliate marketing. WHY IT WORKS One of the most profitable Joint Ventures is seen in the blogging sphere. The blogger owns 20 blogs which receive thousands of hits a month. They ping daily, write free articles to build inbound links, and build subscriber lists. They use Google or affiliate codes to generate income, and help sell products. The main reason why more people are not earning a profit from Joint Ventures is fear. Small business owners think ‘scam’ when someone talks about Joint Ventures. JVs are not a get rich quick scheme. It takes time and work to make $1000 a week. The list owner can send people to the product owner’s web site, but unless there is something to do, or samples, and forums, and ‘contact us’ features, the visitor will probably leave. It is a symbiotic relationship, but no one part can sit back and rake in money without investing time and effort into improving their conversion rates. The list owner and the product owner both work to convert visitors into buyers. The beauty of a Joint Venture is that you do not need to sign away ownership of your business. Everyone is watching The Dragons on television. This group of successful millionaires buys into inventor’s schemes, taking up to 100% ownership of the patens. Joint ventures are different. The Joint Venture is not a merger. It is a relationship between two business entities that will use each other’s strengths improve profits.

There are thousands of affiliate business programs on the internet today that offer wonderfully lucrative opportunities. The majority of business opportunities require zero overhead and once set up, will generate income with little or no maintenance on your part. Affiliate Businesses makes income thru affiliate programs that are simple in concept and work much the same way that word of mouth advertising does. Basically, when you refer a customer through your web site, you are recommending that product or service to your clients. If they sign up or purchase that product or service, you get paid a referral fee or commission. It is that simple. Using affiliate business programs are a fantastic way to get your name out there as well. It is also considerably less expensive and less time consuming than some traditional advertising. Offering your own affiliate business opportunity program to your existing customers and clients can increase your revenue. Paying a referral fee to an already happy customer will generate leads for you. Most affiliate business programs require you to be a member or subscriber to their site. This type of registration is usually free to you. Affiliates often will offer free newsletters or information to their subscribing members that may help you in the process of referring people to them. Free programmed links and free email tags are often offered to help with your affiliate business as well. Adding a link to your existing site to another web site is easy and often a matter of simple copy and paste. Almost all emails have signature lines and a link can be added here as well. Everyone who sees your web site or email will see the link and this increases your ability to earn referrals. Conversely, if you were offering a referral program, this same system will get your name out there to people you ordinarily would not be able to contact. These are affiliate associate program companies that have dozens to hundreds of different affiliate programs to choose from. The advantage to getting affiliated thru these companies is that you are paid one check (usually monthly) for all the companies you are affiliated with. If you sign up for affiliate merchant programs that are not using a backend provider (the name for these affiliate program companies) you will get a check from each one individually. Another adavantage is you can choose from hundreds of affiliate business programs without searching all over the net. They are all listed in one place. You can check out the most popular backend providers below. If you have a successful product or service, offering a referral or affiliate associate program is one of the best advertisements online. Not only are you assured your customers are happy with your services and products, otherwise why would they refer you, but you are getting leads straight from these satisfied customers. Positive feedback of this kind is worth its weight in gold. What if you are the happy customer? Referring people to a place where you have received good value and good customer service is easy. If you are looking to make money by becoming an affiliate, it is as easy as finding out if the places you already go on the internet have affiliate programs. Odds are, they do. You are also not limited to how many affiliations you can have. A few referrals a month can add up to substantial revenue for you in no time. Some businesses that have built their clientele on affiliate associate programs of this kind are Amazon.com and Paypal. These businesses all started small and relied on consistent word of mouth advertising and affiliate programs. One key to their monumental and international success is great customer services coupled with great affiliate programs. For example, say you recommend a book on sales to your consulting clients. Providing a link to that book to the Amazon.com web site will help your clients not only receive the information you find helpful to them, but you will receive a commission on every book that is sold through your site. Do you offer a product or service to other businesses? Paypal has a great affiliate program for business referrals. As you can see, affiliate programs allow you to offer your clientele additional services. This can help your overall customer satisfaction and will help you build your own business as well. Offering your own affiliate program can increase not only your revenue, but your services as well.

What is Affiliate Marketing? Why is the internet a buzz about Affiliate Marketing? And why to dot com millionaires always seemed to be involved in some sort of Affiliate Marketing? If you plan to build an internet business or internet empire without a doubt affiliate marketing is something you need to become involved with. So let’s answer the first question, What is Affiliate Marketing? Affiliate Marketing is selling on behalf of someone else in return for a percentage of the sale. You stock no product, don’t need to package or handle, nor do you have the normal business overheads. What you do need with Affiliate Marketing is web presence. The internet is now so huge – 8 Billion pages and growing – that the chance of someone stumbling on your site is low to nil without doing some tricks of the trade. (see my article or website on generate traffic and create hits) for further on that topic. The simple fact of the matter is you will not get sales if you don’t get traffic. Think of it this way – an affiliate product is sold by advertising, therefore what will generate more sales? One ad or thousands of ads? That’s pretty easy, the more ads, the more traffic, the greater the number of sales. Understand that the conversion rate on the internet is low. A conversion rate is the number of views before a potential sale. Normally this hovers around 1%. It tends not to matter what you are selling this rate tends to remain the same, your offer could be the very best on the net but still the conversion rate tends to be 1% – or one in hundred visitors will buy and make you money. Anyone with a conversion rate of 3% would be considered to be doing amazingly well and most people can not achieve this kind of result. Compare this with the conversion rate of people visiting the local shopping center, apart those teenagers who just love to ‘hang’, most people going to the shops buy at least something. Obviously the internet is a different kind of market. People are in the comfort of their own homes. The psychology of the sale is very different. Whereas people going to the shops are buying necessities like the weekly groceries, online people are tending to buy luxuries. The spur of the moment sale is less demanding as well, because people can bookmark and know they can come back later – they can delay the purchase decision with no fear of losing their chance to purchase. Some internet marketers have tried to overcome this by saying only 50 left, only 33 left, etc, having a count down. But as they tend to be selling information packages and not hard products people still to not have the need to impulse buy. Whereas at the shop they are aware the stock is limited and may be sold out next week so the buy now mentality rules, hence why we continue to have increasing credit card debt. However just because the impulse buy is not the overriding feature on the internet does not mean sales to not occur. They do, and do so on a regular basis. In fact just about anything and everything is sold via the net. Companies already on tight advertising budgets realize you can not dominate the net like you can television or radio advertising. You might have sole sponsorship rights to a particular sports team or sports star i.e. Nike with Tiger Woods, but you can’t dominate eight billion individual pages. So the smart companies decide that the cheapest way to increase there internet present is to appeal to the millions of internet webmasters, etc. How? By giving them a slice of the action, from about 5-10% for sales of traditional items e.g. flowers, hotel stays, etc up to 75% for informational products or services. Whilst one affiliate ad on one site may not generate a huge income, 1000 ads on 1000 sites can generate a small fortune. Although this sort of internet presence takes time to set up, once accomplished they keep on selling day after day with no further input from you necessary. So if you have no affiliate partnerships get moving and get some now. If you have sites, maximize their income potential by adding affiliate banners and links. The most popular providers of affiliate links are clixGalore, clickbank and Commission Junction. My favorite is clixGalore due to their easy to use interface and there provision of traditional product lines and worldwide coverage in most currencies if clixGalore and I strongly suggest you join them. I also like clickbank and their advantage is that they affiliate programs tend to have a higher payout percentage. Commission Junction is my least favorite because many of its programs are very selective about who they have as affiliate partners.

This question could be extended by “or any Internet Marketers”. The answer to that question was widely believed to be “Yes”. The Misconception People tend to think of an Affiliate as a tech savvy geek that spends day and night to find ways to promote a big merchant and make big bucks via the commission earned for the sales made by the referred customers; a person that is very protective about everything he does, that generates at least a few sales or leads. You probably also thought of the people that run the Affiliate Program for a Merchant, who are called Affiliate Managers or short AM’s, are snobby suits that try to use the legions of their affiliates to generate easy money for their employers. Socializing would almost be unthinkable if this is true. Who is going to socialize with his maid? Right? This picture of affiliates and their counterpart on the merchant side seems to be a misconception that might be true only in some rare cases. It did not took very long after affiliate programs became more and more popular that Affiliate Forums emerged, especially when Amazon.com launched their Affiliate Program (Amazon called it Associate Program) in 1996 which allowed instant signup and approval for anybody and his uncle in combination with the growing trend of creating personal home pages on free holsters like Geo Cities. Early Communities, Forums Forums like the AssociatePrograms.com Forum, RevBoard, ABestWeb, Affiliate Boards and Affiliate Marketing Forum at WebProWorld were frequented by affiliates using nick names or just the first name to exchange general information about programs, commissions and that sort of things. Posting of Affiliate Site URL’s was a “don’t do it” rule although most forums did not specifically prohibited the posting of links, if related to the discussed topic. Some had the rule not to post somebody else’s Affiliate URL. The fear for copy cats and the potential loss of hard earned commissions was wide spread and sometimes also well founded. Anything that was giving hints to the identity of the affiliate and it’s website was avoided by most members in the public forum areas. That affiliates are social could already be seen in the “off topic” or “midnight chat” sections of the Affiliate Marketing Forums, if such a category was available. Towards the end of last year sites started to emerge that supported and even encouraged social mingling between affiliates and also affiliate managers and networks. The New Trend, Social Netwoks for Internet Marketers, social community sites following the trend of general social sites like MySpace.com, but created solely for People in the Internet Marketing Industry. If it would be correct, that the people in that industry, especially the affiliates, are not social, sites would vanish quickly because of lack of users to support it. Of course is a lot of the communication related to internet marketing, but the communication goes far beyond that. Personal Information and thoughts are shared in public message boards, special interest groups, blogs and mail. Every member has also his own blog, message board, book mark collection and can create freely new groups for others to join. Members that disguise their origin and blog their personal pages are the exception. Examples for Internet or Affiliate Marketing Community sites are the Affiliate Summit Social Network, created for the attendees of the Affiliate Summit Conference, the Ad-Tech Connect Social Network and ReturnOnAffiliate.com. Fazit I am convinced, that this trend will continue in the years to come and have a major impact on the affiliate marketing industry. Connecting through social networks allows marketers to get to know each other much better and help with the creation of new professional and personal relationships. Problems between merchants and affiliates will probably solved much quicker and easier without escalating as much as they used to in the past, because instead of Affiliate xxx having a problem with by, John has a problem with the Merchant Jane is working for. If you ask yourself the question, who would you rather do business with, the one you don’t know or the one you can associate a face with and know personally through interactions on community sites? If the business reasons are not overwhelmingly leaning towards one of them, I would go with the one I know personally. Business is much easier and enjoyable if you do it with a “him” or “her” and not an “it”. See you soon at an Internet Marketing Community Site.

If you want to make money with affiliate programs, you should stop listening to the people behind these programs.

That may sound crazy, but I have good reason for saying that. Most affiliate marketers wind up doing the following and failing miserably.

Does any of this sound familiar? If it does, you are not the only one. The sad fact is that not more than 5% of affiliates manage to make more than $25.00 from any of their efforts.

So, what is the answer?

1. Start by going to Commission Junction, Linkshare, Clickbank, etc. and try doing some in depth research in a niche market that you know something about or have an interest in. You don’t have to be in love with the product, but if you believe in it, it is easier to convince someone that it is a good product.

2. Take a good look at the product conversion rate, make sure it is high. Commission Junction can supply you with a report for the last three months and last seven days of earnings per click. This is a big help in choosing the best paying product.

3. Make use of a software known as the Product Idea Profitability Evaluator. This is a great tool to figure out profitability of a product. You can eliminate many niches that you think would be profitable with this software. It will assess keywords, and profitability potential. It will also give you important information to determine profitability based on pay per click. You can use it for free for 10 days.

4. You next need to determine and buy a domain name (Go Daddy) and get a reliable hosting company (I use Hostgator). You can get free hosting but it is not recommended. If you want to come across as being professional, a free hosting company will destroy that image. The ads they will place on your site will make your website look like an advertising billboard. For any web business, building trust and confidence are of great importance.

5. If you don’t know how to build a website, there are many tutorials online, many in video format. Or if you have the money, hire a web designer to do the work for you. Do a Google search for website tutorials or html tutorials. Make sure you build a site with lots of good content, not something that is just full of product hype.

6. Next, you will need to promote your website. There are many ways to promote websites. Do a Google search on site promotion and you will see millions of results. Look at the first 5-10 for a good idea of the direction you want to go with your promotion.

7. If you really want to get a lot of traffic, build yourself a good link directory. That way, the search engines will pick up your site if your content is really good. Make sure you use a lot of your targeted keywords in the website so that they are picked up by the web spiders and you get a lot of free promotion on the search engines. This is known as Search Engine Optimization

8. Remember these steps and repeat them for every new affiliate product you want to promote.

If you are new to the Internet money making machine called Affiliate marketing then this article is for you. Affiliate marketing has evolved from the days when Amazon offered webmasters a pay-for-performance opportunity if they advertised and sold books supplied by Amazon on their websites.Today the products that produce large profits for Affiliate marketers are adult, gambling and retail industry. On the other hand, for more details visit to www.ppc-profit-marketer.com there is properly optimized websites drawing over $100,000 per month in Affiliate money through other avenues.Companies that will pay you a percentage of the sale of a product you advertised are known as “Publishers”. You (the advertiser/seller) are known as the “Affiliate”. Google Adsense is a form of marketing where you’re paid when someone clicks on an advertisement on your website (you get paid whether they buy or not). The difference between Affiliate marketing and Google Adsense is…Affiliate money is made on the sale and Google Adsense money is made on the click. In most cases Affiliate programs that pay per sale will generate higher profits in the short term. Websites or Affiliate Networks such as ClickBank, for more details visit to www.affiliate-windfall-secrets.com Commission Junction, Link share and others provide the advertising channels of Affiliate Marketing and will handle all financial transactions between Publishers and Affiliates. It is not always necessary to use a company like Click Bank or Commission Junction to find a network of Publishers but it does make good sense. Some online businesses prefer to handle the affiliate financial transactions themselves. For businesses offering products and services for sale to the public it also makes good business sense to develop a sustainable Marketing campaign that includes Affiliate marketing (but choose your affiliates wisely). Although it could be hard to track you want to make every effort to ensure your affiliates do not use spam tactics to market your product. Some Publishers offer bonuses to top performing Affiliates which fosters a more driven promotion campaign. There are people making 6+ figure annual incomes from this type of marketing. Do not think for a minute successful affiliate marketers have not put in the necessary research and development of their skills to get there. The most difficult part of marketing any product online is attracting leads and driving them through the purchasing cycle. The aforementioned entails a highly optimized website with content that shows the consumer why they should purchase said product.Affiliate Marketing is not a “get rich quick” business model. What it is, is a opportunity for the average individual that would like to work from home to do so and have more flexibility with their time. There are not many 9 – 5 jobs that offer the opportunities Affiliate Marketing does.Remember; if you’re an advertiser marketing affiliate products on your website, choose your affiliate programs wisely. Sometimes it isn’t as wise to select the most popular affiliate program as they could be over advertised (or saturated). You can find less popular affiliate programs in a similar market as those that are on every shelf so to speak. Doing your own review of your affiliate products is a good idea because it not only gives consumers some incite but it could also build your credibility. Please visit our website for this and more Internet home based business strategies and opportunities.

Over 50,000 web based businesses and more than 10,000 affiliates use ClickBank to facilitate speedy delivery of software and e Books goods and services online using a commission-based program that benefits the publisher and the affiliate. The CB Marketplace reaches every marketing niche that exists. You can use it to jumpstart your own internet marketing business.
The sellers and the vendors who are also known as ‘publishers’ use ClickBank to process their sales and ordering process. If they offer an affiliate program then it will automatically credit the amount payable to the affiliate as sales are earned through that affiliate’s account. It processes the orders, pays the bills to the customer and the publisher etc. and for beginners, can remarkably simplify the process.
ClickBank not only helps affiliate programs and publishers but it also helps them earn extra money on referrals. And the best part is that most of the program and service involved is free. It takes minutes to open your account as a seller or affiliate and you can get up and running right away. For an affiliate marketer there are thousands of products to choose from in the Marketplace. As you browse the available products you have statistics displayed to show the most popular items available for you to promote.
For both affiliates and merchants, once you start you have all your commissions, earnings and promotions displayed on the site. ClickBank handles the entire marketing and sales process. Merchants do not have to pay anything until their book or software is sold.
You can purchase a huge range of products too for the affiliate market – when you place an order you’ll be taken straight to the download page when the order is approved. On this page details about the download, information about finding further resources and the contact details will also be provided.
As an affiliate, once you select products to promote your task is to do the marketing. This can be done through email campaigns, on your website, through advertising on other websites, or by article marketing and linking to the product using your affiliate link in your article’s resource box.
Clickbank is perhaps the simplest way to get a feel of the quality and scope of products out there on the internet marketing scene and is perhaps the simplest startup business for someone new to internet marketing. Through affiliate marketing you may work hard at the start to get your promotions out there but once things get going you will have a system in place to continue to earn sales passively for years to come. And that’s really just the beginning.

Invented by CDNow.com at the end of 1994 and pioneered by Amazon.com in 1996, “affiliate programs”, also known as Associate Programs or Partner Programs, are a simple way for Web sites to generate revenue by directing traffic toward other sites and a great way for the operating site to increase its traffic and revenue. Because affiliate programs are so convenient and work so well, they have become the industry’s dominant method of online Marketing. There are 4 different kinds of affiliate programs to compensate “Affiliates” (or referring sites) for generating traffic to the Affiliate Program operating Website: Pay-Per-Impression, Pay-Per-Click, Pay-Per-Lead and Pay-Per-Sale.

Pay-Per-Impression (CPM)The Pay-Per-Impression and Pay-Per-Click Model are not common to be used in Affiliate Marketing anymore. They were used in the Past, but were mostly abandoned due to Fraud and lack of Results. The CPM (cost-per-impression) compensation Model was revived by Google for Google AdWords in summer 2005. The feature is called “Site-Targeting” in AdWords and allows you to display your Adsense Ad on a specific Website that runs AdSense Ads.

Pay-Per-Click (CPC) ModelLike the Pay-per-Impression model was the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Model popular during the dot com boom at the end of the 1990th but was mostly abandoned by Advertisers for Advertisements on other Websites due to rampart problems with click fraud. The PPC Model was kept alive by the PPC Search Engine GoTo.com which became later Overture.com and is now owned by Yahoo! and renamed from “Yahoo Sponsored Search” to Yahoo Search Marketing. Google launched their PPC Service AdWords in 2000. Ask Jeeves, now simply Ask.com followed with their PPC Service in 2005 called Ask Sponsored Listings and MSN.com in 2006 with AdCenter. Other PPC Services are Miva/FindWhat.com and 7Search.com.

Contextual AdvertisingThe big come-back of PPC came when Google launched AdSense in 2003, the birth of contextual Advertising. What is Google AdSense? Here is a quote from Google’s History at Google’s corporate Website.

Google AdSense: “… offering web sites of all sizes a way to easily generate revenue through placement of highly targeted ads adjacent to their content. Google AdSense technology analyzes the text on any given page and delivers ads that are appropriate and relevant, increasing the usefulness of the page and the likelihood that those viewing it will actually click on the advertising presented there.” Yahoo’s Version of AdSense called Yahoo! Publisher Network was launched (beta) in 2005. Microsoft is also working on their own Version of AdSense which is expected to be launched (beta) in 2006.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)Classic PPC Search Engine Marketing (Cost-Per-Click (CPC) advertising) is not Affiliate Marketing. It is an entirely different type of Internet Marketing and only has some technical details in common with old PPC/CPC Affiliate Marketing. Ads are primarily displayed at the Search Engine Search Results Pages (SERPs) next to organic, free, Search Results. Contextual Advertising introduced with Google AdSense is also not Affiliate Marketing since no direct Partnership between the Advertiser who creates and pays for the Ads and the Publisher who displays the Ads on his Website.

This type of Marketing is generally referred to as Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and is often and wrongly mixed up and confused with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which is about improving the ranking of a Site in the organic, free, SERPs at major Search Engines via technical means and deep understanding of the complicated ranking algorithms used by modern Search Engines.

Pay-Per-Call Advertising is neither Search Engine Marketing (SEM) nor Affiliate Marketing. Recently developed call-tracking technology allows to create a bridge between online and offline Advertising. Pay-Per-Call Advertising is still new and in it’s infancy. It is expected to become the 4th major type of Internet Marketing next to Affiliate Marketing, Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization within the next years.

The Affiliate Marketing shifted almost entirely to the Pay-Per-Lead (CPA or CPL) and Pay-Per-Sale Model (CPS) which is also known as Performance Marketing. The paid commission is usually a percentage of the referred sales or a flat dollar amount.

The Pay-Per-Lead (CPA or CPL) ModelThe Advertiser pays Affiliates a Flat Amount Commission if a referred visitor performs a specific action on the Advertisers Site. It could be Actions like filling out a Form, Signing up for a Newsletter or Creating an Account. The CPA Model is very popular with Online Services like Credit Card Providers, Insurance Services, DVD and Video Game Rental Services and Loans and Mortgages. Due to the usual high flat commission amount is the CPA very attractive for PPC Affiliates that do not have a permanent Website and an established User Base. Before you consider the CPA Model for you problem, make sure to have mechanisms in place to validate the quality of referred leads. Your program will be vulnerable to become a victim of fraud, affiliates that generate tons of “fake” leads if you do not have anything in place to verify the quality of the produced leads.

The Pay-Per-Sale (CPS) ModelThis Model is used by most Online Merchants today. The Merchant pays a percentage of the Order Amount that was created by a customer who was referred by an Affiliate.

Do not pay commissions that you end up loosing money on an order. You will gain new customers because of the Affiliate Program, but you will also pay commissions for returning customers. Shoppers on the internet are more savvy today. Comparison Shopping Sites, Coupon Sites, Cash-Back Shopping and Charity Sites, that make up a large percentage of successful affiliates, are often visited by Shoppers first. See the Affiliate Program also as a Customer Retention Tool. CPA or CPS?If your competitors have affiliate programs and you don’t, chances are good, that you are loosing a considerable amount of business to them, because the lag of an affiliate program for your site. If you want to use an Affiliate Program as an Online Merchant for the whole purpose of customer acquisition, consider the CPA Model and pay a flat commission for new customers referrer by affiliates. Do the math to come up with a Flat Commission that makes it worthwhile for affiliates to promote you. Affiliates are not waiting for you, the next Merchant that has a Program is only one click away. What you do and what commission you pay is up to you. You can also mix compensation models. The best thing to do is always to check first what your competitors are doing and use their compensation model as reference. Pay-Per-Sale is by far the most common compensation model. 2/3 to 3/4 of all Affiliate Programs today are Pay-per-Sale Programs. The operating Site only pays “Commission” to their Affiliates for actual Results (a Sale, Sign-up etc.) and not just for promises (Clickthroughs, Banner Impressions). Affiliate NetworksOperating an affiliate program to drive traffic to your website has never been easier. Most Sites utilize 3rd Party Services (so called Affiliate Networks). Those Services provide the infrastructure for you to track all the traffic and referrals to your Website. Networks also work as a Recruiting Platform to find Websites willing to promote your Products or Services. The Integration of their Service usually takes just a few days or sometimes just a few hours. Some of the Networks also help you to keep the generated overhead low (such as Payment of the Affiliates). Networks usually charge 20-30% of the commission you pay to Affiliates as Fee to you. If the Fee is 25% for example and you pay 10% commission per Sale to you Affiliate, you must pay $12.5 in commission and fee for a $100 Sale.

In-House Affiliate Program Solutions and SoftwareYou might want to have more control over your Affiliate Program and avoid the Network fees by running the program In-House. You can, of course, develop all the necessary tools and technology by yourself, but that is may be not very cost effective and not as easy as it seems. The technology has already been developed by various Affiliate Tracking Solution Providers and Software Packages. They are most of the time easy to plug into your existing Sites and have already proven themselves. Be carefull with too small or too new Solution and Software Provoiders. Check the Background of the Company you consider first. Do your diligence! Outsourcing – Outsourced Program Management (OPM)When you have your Program up and running, the first and important step was done. Now begins the complicated part starts. The Wild West of Affiliate Marketing when quick and easy money was made and having an Affiliate Program running on “Auto Drive” generated a huge increase in sales by affiliates that seeked out programs and did everything themselves without the need of support and guidance is over. Business on the internet matured and Affiliate Marketing as well. An Affiliate Program requires attention. To get active and quality affiliates requires active recruitment efforts. Support of existing affiliates also became vital. A clear set of Rules, the Affiliate Agreement, must be worked out and be enforced. Allocate Resources to the program and don’t do it on the side.Your program is destined to fail if you don’t spend the required resources and time for your program. If you don’t have the resources in-house, consider outsourcing of your program management (OPM). There are today a number of quality service companies available that are specialized in this.
