Are you an affiliate? Or do you want to make to make money online as an affiliate? If that sounds like you, I’m going to make it worth your while to read the whole of this short article. “How?”, you ask. Let’s take an example. The health and wellbeing niche. It’s a huge market with lots of products in a range of categories, e.g. weight loss, fitness, alternative medicine etc. Each of these can be subdivided further, e.g. how to lose 10 pounds, get a six pack, stop smoking ect – it’s massive. Use the popularity and market size to get an idea of what’s selling and what people want, because that’s what you’re going to give them, and they’ll pay you for the trouble.
Use internet forums and places such as yahoo answers to find out popular topics and find out their problems. Hopefully they should correlate well with the niches we uncovered previously.
Find An An Affiliate Program (and Product) That Pays…
Next up, you want to find affiliate products that you can promote that directly target the market you have just uncovered. You can find digital products at clickbank.com, paydotcom.com and physical products from cj.com and linkshare.com. All of these offer revenue sharing or affiliate relationships with vendors.
You want to find a program/product that pays you a high commission – you’re doing all the work after all. I always look for over 50% on digital products, sometimes you’ll be able to get up to 75% commission, so you actually make more per sale than the vendor! On physical products look for over 10%.
Ideally the affiliate program/products should provide you with secure links so you can avoid affiliate link theft, and if possible have link tracking (if not use a program such as Adtrackz to track your links).
The vendor should also have a good sales process, well written (professional) salesletters, an easy way to contact customer support and excellent customer support. Also see if they have an automated follow up system in place, as you can get paid on sales made at a later date if a proper autoresponder/newsletter system is in place.
Another thing to look out for is if you can get paid by referring other affiliates. Some vendors will offer you a commission on all sales made by affiliates you refer, or have products for their affiliates with which you can earn commission on (as well as the normal products).
Here are two case studies from the health niche to demonstrate some of the points we’ve discussed:

So the smart companies decide that the cheapest way to increase there internet present is to appeal to the millions of internet webmasters, etc. How? By giving them a slice of the action, from about 5-10% for sales of traditional items e.g. flowers, hotel stays, etc up to 75% for informational products or services. Whilst one affiliate ad on one site may not generate a huge income, 1000 ads on 1000 sites can generate a small fortune. Although this sort of internet presence takes time to set up, once accomplished they keep on selling day after day with no further input from you necessary. So if you have no affiliate partnerships get moving and get some now. If you have sites, maximize their income potential by adding affiliate banners and links. This picture of affiliates and their counterpart on the merchant side seems to be a misconception that might be true only in some rare cases. It did not took very long after affiliate programs became more and more popular that Affiliate Forums emerged, especially when Amazon.com launched their Affiliate Program (Amazon called it Associate Program) in 1996 which allowed instant signup and approval for anybody and his uncle in combination with the growing trend of creating personal home pages on free holsters like Geo Cities. Early Communities, Forums Forums like the AssociatePrograms.com Forum, RevBoard, ABestWeb, Affiliate Boards and Affiliate Marketing Forum at WebProWorld were frequented by affiliates using nick names or just the first name to exchange general information about programs, commissions and that sort of things. Posting of Affiliate Site URL’s was a “don’t do it” rule although most forums did not specifically prohibited the posting of links, if related to the discussed topic. Some had the rule not to post somebody else’s Affiliate URL. The fear for copy cats and the potential loss of hard earned commissions was wide spread and sometimes also well founded. Anything that was giving hints to the identity of the affiliate and it’s website was avoided by most members in the public forum areas. That affiliates are social could already be seen in the “off topic” or “midnight chat” sections of the Affiliate Marketing Forums, if such a category was available. Towards the end of last year sites started to emerge that supported and even encouraged social mingling between affiliates and also affiliate managers and networks. The New Trend, Social Netwoks for Internet Marketers, social community sites following the trend of general social sites like MySpace.com, but created solely for People in the Internet Marketing Industry. If it would be correct, that the people in that industry, especially the affiliates, are not social, sites would vanish quickly because of lack of users to support it. Of course is a lot of the communication related to internet marketing, but the communication goes far beyond that. Personal Information and thoughts are shared in public message boards, special interest groups, blogs and mail. Every member has also his own blog, message board, book mark collection and can create freely new groups for others to join. Members that disguise their origin and blog their personal pages are the exception. Examples for Internet or Affiliate Marketing Community sites are the Affiliate Summit Social Network, created for the attendees of the Affiliate Summit Conference, the Ad-Tech Connect Social Network and ReturnOnAffiliate.com. Fazit I am convinced, that this trend will continue in the years to come and have a major impact on the affiliate marketing industry. Connecting through social networks allows marketers to get to know each other much better and help with the creation of new professional and personal relationships. 3. Make use of a software known as the Product Idea Profitability Evaluator. This is a great tool to figure out profitability of a product. You can eliminate many niches that you think would be profitable with this software. It will assess keywords, and profitability potential. It will also give you important information to determine profitability based on pay per click. You can use it for free for 10 days.

4. You next need to determine and buy a domain name (Go Daddy) and get a reliable hosting company (I use Hostgator). You can get free hosting but it is not recommended. If you want to come across as being professional, a free hosting company will destroy that image. The ads they will place on your site will make your website look like an advertising billboard. For any web business, building trust and confidence are of great importance.

5. If you don’t know how to build a website, there are many tutorials online, many in video format. Or if you have the money, hire a web designer to do the work for you. Do a Google search for website tutorials or html tutorials. Make sure you build a site with lots of good content, not something that is just full of product hype.

6. Next, you will need to promote your website. There are many ways to promote websites. Do a Google search on site promotion and you will see millions of results. Look at the first 5-10 for a good idea of the direction you want to go with your promotion.

7. If you really want to get a lot of traffic, build yourself a good link directory. That way, the search engines will pick up your site if your content is really good. Make sure you use a lot of your targeted keywords in the website so that they are picked up by the web spiders and you get a lot of free promotion on the search engines. Invented by CDNow.com at the end of 1994 and pioneered by Amazon.com in 1996, “affiliate programs”, also known as Associate Programs or Partner Programs, are a simple way for Web sites to generate revenue by directing traffic toward other sites and a great way for the operating site to increase its traffic and revenue. Because affiliate programs are so convenient and work so well, they have become the industry’s dominant method of online Marketing. There are 4 different kinds of affiliate programs to compensate “Affiliates” (or referring sites) for generating traffic to the Affiliate Program operating Website: Pay-Per-Impression, Pay-Per-Click, Pay-Per-Lead and Pay-Per-Sale.

Pay-Per-Impression (CPM)The Pay-Per-Impression and Pay-Per-Click Model are not common to be used in Affiliate Marketing anymore. They were used in the Past, but were mostly abandoned due to Fraud and lack of Results. The CPM (cost-per-impression) compensation Model was revived by Google for Google AdWords in summer 2005. The feature is called “Site-Targeting” in AdWords and allows you to display your Adsense Ad on a specific Website that runs AdSense Ads.

Pay-Per-Click (CPC) ModelLike the Pay-per-Impression model was the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Model popular during the dot com boom at the end of the 1990th but was mostly abandoned by Advertisers for Advertisements on other Websites due to rampart problems with click fraud. The PPC Model was kept alive by the PPC Search Engine GoTo.com which became later Overture.com and is now owned by Yahoo! and renamed from “Yahoo Sponsored Search” to Yahoo Search Marketing. Google launched their PPC Service AdWords in 2000. Ask Jeeves, now simply Ask.com followed with their PPC Service in 2005 called Ask Sponsored Listings and MSN.com in 2006 with AdCenter. Other PPC Services are Miva/FindWhat.com and 7Search.com.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)Classic PPC Search Engine Marketing (Cost-Per-Click (CPC) advertising) is not Affiliate Marketing. It is an entirely different type of Internet Marketing and only has some technical details in common with old PPC/CPC Affiliate Marketing. Ads are primarily displayed at the Search Engine Search Results Pages (SERPs) next to organic, free, Search Results. Contextual Advertising introduced with Google AdSense is also not Affiliate Marketing since no direct Partnership between the Advertiser who creates and pays for the Ads and the Publisher who displays the Ads on his Website.

This type of Marketing is generally referred to as Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and is often and wrongly mixed up and confused with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which is about improving the ranking of a Site in the organic, free, SERPs at major Search Engines via technical means and deep understanding of the complicated ranking algorithms used by modern Search Engines.

Pay-Per-Call Advertising is neither Search Engine Marketing (SEM) nor Affiliate Marketing. Recently developed call-tracking technology allows to create a bridge between online and offline Advertising. Pay-Per-Call Advertising is still new and in it’s infancy. It is expected to become the 4th major type of Internet Marketing next to Affiliate Marketing, Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization within the next years.

The Affiliate Marketing shifted almost entirely to the Pay-Per-Lead (CPA or CPL) and Pay-Per-Sale Model (CPS) which is also known as Performance Marketing. The paid commission is usually a percentage of the referred sales or a flat dollar amount.

The operating Site only pays “Commission” to their Affiliates for actual Results (a Sale, Sign-up etc.) and not just for promises (Clickthroughs, Banner Impressions). Affiliate NetworksOperating an affiliate program to drive traffic to your website has never been easier. Most Sites utilize 3rd Party Services (so called Affiliate Networks). Those Services provide the infrastructure for you to track all the traffic and referrals to your Website. Networks also work as a Recruiting Platform to find Websites willing to promote your Products or Services. The Integration of their Service usually takes just a few days or sometimes just a few hours. Some of the Networks also help you to keep the generated overhead low (such as Payment of the Affiliates). Networks usually charge 20-30% of the commission you pay to Affiliates as Fee to you. If the Fee is 25% for example and you pay 10% commission per Sale to you Affiliate, you must pay $12.5 in commission and fee for a $100 Sale.

In-House Affiliate Program Solutions and SoftwareYou might want to have more control over your Affiliate Program and avoid the Network fees by running the program In-House. You can, of course, develop all the necessary tools and technology by yourself, but that is may be not very cost effective and not as easy as it seems.
