Affiliate marketing is a method of promoting a web business in which an affiliate earns a commission for each visitor that takes action on the merchant’s website.
An affiliate may be rewarded for each customer sale (pay-per -sale, subscriber (pay-per-lead), or visit (pay-per click). The merchant decides the value rewarded for the action.
Sites like Amazon.com have decided to run their affiliate program directly from their website. Others use a third party service like Commission Junction (cj.com) or Linkshare.com to track affiliate links and sales.
How does affiliate marketing work?
Signing up for the program
An affiliate can sign up for a merchant’s program either directly on the merchant’s site, if that is where they run the program, or through the third party intermediary. Most affiliate programs are free. However, due to spamming, and to insure the affiliate’s site matches the merchant’s, some merchants will now investigate the affiliate’s site before they allow them to join their affiliate program.
It is not unusual for a merchant to decide against allowing someone into the program. Their site may not relate to their own or they may not have enough traffic.
Your Affiliate ID
If the merchant accepts the affiliate, the affiliate is then given an affiliate ID or code that allows them to promote the website. This ID is found on all marketing and promotional tools offered by the merchant including banners, text links, and graphics. Some merchants allow the affiliate to customize their link by adding their own name.
Because this ID is found on all the marketing tools, an affiliate simply needs to place their banner or text link on their website or blog and then drive traffic to the site.
Earning your commission
When a visitor to the affiliate’s site clicks the banner, and then completes the action required, the affiliate would then earn a commission. The best way to describe this is if the affiliate was a car salesman, and someone bought a car they would earn a commission. Online though, an affiliate can earn a commission for generating a lead or sending a visitor to the merchant’s site.
The visitor must complete the action in order to receive the reward. It is important that the affiliate understands what they are being paid for.
The merchant will then give you a commission for the action completed. The commission rates vary depending on the merchant. Because there are so many affiliate programs on the web now, many merchants offer commission of 50% or higher in order to keep up with competition.
Some affiliate programs offer recurring commissions in which an affiliate would be rewarded for future sales as well. For instance, if the affiliate was part of a magazine site they would receive a commission every time their past subscribers renewed their subscription.
There are also tier programs. This works on recruiting new members into the program. When someone you referred makes a sale you earn from their commission as well.
Merchants are offering more ways for affiliates to earn such as, earning for offline sales and offering more marketing material for their affiliates.
To sum it up, affiliate marketing works by the affiliate aligning themselves between merchants and customers. The affiliate earns a commission, when an action is completed, via the affiliate ID.

There are a number of steps you should take before signing up with an affiliate partner. First, you should read the affiliates terms and conditions. Too often, budding marketers skip over an affiliates terms. An affiliate partner may not allow for Google Adwords or other marketing avenues so make sure this is not explicitly laid out in the affiliates terms and conditions. If there are no terms of service, this should be a warning in itself. A reputable affiliate will normally have terms of service.

Payment is obviously a huge one. Make sure the affiliate has reasonable terms. Some affiliates, such as Amazon, only pay out after a set number of sales—you do not make a dime on the first, second, or even tenth sale. Other affiliates will pay out for each sale. The flip side is that an affiliate with a sales minimum may also have a better percentage payout. The best-case scenario is to find an affiliate partner that pays out for every sale and offers a good percentage.

This will be all for naught if the affiliate does not pay out in a timely manner. Try and not learn from experience, in other words, don’t get burned. Instead, learn from other people’s experience. Go to affiliate marketing forums to see if a particular affiliate has a good or bad reputation. The trouble here is that a new affiliate might not have a marketer base yet, and these affiliates usually offer the most attractive terms in order to bring affiliates in. Use some common sense—if the affiliate’s site is well designed and they offer a good and useful product, you could try and test the waters.

On that front, it is sometimes a good idea to find an affiliate partner that is not overly saturated. If you offer a service that can’t be found on every other web page, it can lead to a better sales rate. However, once again there’s a flip side: if it’s a virtually unknown site, it’s harder to build up buyer’s trust, as compared to well-known affiliate programs like Amazon or the Discover card. A lot of the onus falls on you—if your site is well designed and well managed, buyers will trust your affiliate links.

1. What Is an Affiliate Management Program and Why Do You Need One?
Affiliate management programs allow you to effectively operate your affiliate program and the partnerships formed through it. You need effective affiliate management to ensure the highest ROI possible for all of your partnerships. Amazon.com is the poster child for a hugely successful affiliate management program. How did they do it? By using a robust affiliate management program and providing powerful tools and training to their affiliates.

2. Where Can You Find an Effective Affiliate Management Program?
Of course, Amazon’s affiliate management program, code is proprietary, so you won’t be able to get your hands on that, but you CAN get one. Then, just how can you get your own affiliate management program? It’s simple, they’re everywhere. If you type the phrase “affiliate management program” into your favorite search engine, you’ll see a plethora of returned search results. Don’t despair just yet; I’m going to tell you just what to look for in an effective affiliate management program.

But for now, you must decide if it’s more of a benefit for you to buy and install an off-the-shelf software package on your server, or to pay for a hosted service, even if you have the expertise to easily install your own program. Does the boxed version do everything you need it to do? Is the price right? (Only you can decide that.)

3. Things to Look for In an Affiliate Management Program
Your affiliate management program should allow you to track your affiliates’ progress, train them, contact them individually, and even make special arrangements with them (partnerships). A quality affiliate management program should immediately give you the information you need about your affiliates at a glance.

You should instantly be able to see who your best performing affiliates are and which ones are struggling. In this case, use the tools in your affiliate management program to email an automated training series to the affiliates who are having difficulty, or offer more personalized help. The choice is yours. On the flip-side of that, you can offer your best performers better incentives to keep the sales coming. Does your current affiliate management program allow you to do this?

4. What Are Multi-tiered Affiliate Management Programs
A multi-tiered affiliate management program is one that not only pays your affiliates commissions on the sales they make, but it also allows them to recruit others and make a percentage of their sales as well. Multi-tiered affiliate management programs are structured somewhat like MLM programs. They allow the top person to make a percentage of the sales of everyone else whom they recruit. Some affiliate programs go as deep as 5 levels, but these normally don’t live up to expectations. It’s like, “each one – teach one. The person directly above is responsible for the success of the person directly beneath them.

Two-tiered affiliate management programs usually work best for this. They are the most effective, as others don’t pay as well on the 1st and 2nd levels (tiers) as the 2-tier affiliate management programs. Affiliate management programs that stretch beyond 2 levels may place the highest commission percentage to be earned on the lower levels – which are usually not filled. This prevents the affiliates from making the max commissions on their sales. It also provides little incentive for affiliates to keep promoting your product/service.

Therefore, for the best results I strongly recommend you use a two-tier affiliate management program if you’re thinking of implementing a multi-tiered affiliate management program. Better yet, implement an affiliate management program that gives you the flexibility to offer a flat affiliate program, a 2-tiered affiliate program, or no program at all to your affiliates.

Look for an affiliate management program that’s part of a package, or e-business suite. The package or suite should be a synergistic combination of e-business tools that you effectively manage and see the results of your efforts. For instance, you should be able to view your affilliates’ stats, ads, and progress, etc. Don’t make it harder that it has to be. Let the tools do the work for you by choosing the right tools upfront. So, you need a combination of powerful tools that automatically run and manage your affiliate program for you.

Offer your affiliates a chance to earn commissions, even recurring commissions through your affiliate management program. Let your affiliate program do the tracking and expense calculations. You benefit by instantly seeing which ads produce the best results for you, and which ones you need to toss. Then, everyone’s happy – you and your affiliates!

Thanks for reading, and much success to you in your online endeavors!

You won’t find a business in existence that doesn’t have both good and bad selling points. Every business is different, with some you learn to deal with the fact that your product seasonal or regional, Franchises cam be great as far as the assistance both financial and business wise that you are given but frustrating when it comes to them having final say over what you can and can’t do or can and can’t sell. If you want to succeed with your business you need one that you can enjoy and that has more good points than bad.

ClickBank has its good and bad points just as any other business does. On the good side, it is very easy to get started. The sign up process is simple and there is enough free information available to give you a good start. The downside? With all that information available and the sign up itself being so simple you may go in with the mistaken impression that this will take no work on your part. All business requires some work on your part, the more work you are willing to put in the greater the payback.

Back to the good side: ClickBank’s customer service is top notch and their policies are spelled out in simple English. What is and is not allowed is stated very straightforward. There are real live people to answer your questions and help you find solutions. One downside here is their no hassle 90-day return policy does draw scam refunders.

Again on the good side: there are hundreds of product listings to choose from. They are rated so you can see what is a hot seller right now. On the bad side: there are hundreds of product listings to choose from that in itself can become a nightmare. Good point: If you are one of those people that have trouble deciding between products then ClickBank has the solution for that too. You can set up to point your customers to the Marketplace and let them select the products they want to buy.

Yea: You have great flexibility. You can choose from products already out on the market or just coming out into the market or you can sell your own products. You can be both vendor and affiliate. You will find lots of information on making and selling your own e-books or designing your own programs. Nay: If you have your own products to sell but need complete control over when, where and for how much they are sold you probably shouldn’t use this particular venue for your sales.

Really good: You can choose products that pay a commission that is acceptable to you and you do not have to worry about billing anyone to get paid. ClickBank collects the product payment, figures your commission and the seller’s portion and they take care of paying both of you.

If you go into this understanding that you are not going to just sign up, sit back and make thousands of dollars a week while sitting on your butt watching television. If you are willing to do the research, find the right products, develop a good customer base with good customer service then you can make good money with ClickBank.

CBmall does virtually all the work. All you need to do is drive some traffic and the mall does the rest. And the cool part is that once people are shopping in the mall for one product, they often go on to buy another. (If you’ve ever taken your teenager shopping at the mall, you’ll know exactly what I mean!)

It’s easy to sign up for their free course called: 15 Powerful Ways CBmall Makes You Money. This course shows you the power and sophistication behind CBmall. You’ll soon see why Cbmall represents a new trend in Affiliate programs.

But honestly, my favorite part is that I can shop in my own mall now, and get all the ebooks I want at a discounted price through my own Affiliate link! I love a bargain!

Okay, you’ve created your product, you’ve signed up with Clickbank and now you’re ready for all the sales to just start rolling in. Well, not so fast. See, there is a slight little problem. Clickbank is a pretty big place and your product is just one out of the many thousands that it sells. To make matters worse, you don’t get yourself even listed in the marketplace until you’ve had at least 1 sale. Plus, you need to have at least 1 sale every month to stay there. Otherwise, you’re back into the black hole of the Internet. The only person who’s going to know your product exists is you. So, what do you do?

Well, for starters, you better get going and start promoting your product on your own. There are many avenues of promotion on the Internet, many are either free or very cheap. This will at least give
you some exposure so that people know your product exists.

The next thing you can do is, instead of promoting the product itself, make people aware that it exists and let them know that if they choose to sell it they’ll be getting a hefty 75% commission from every sale. That may seem high at the start, but in offering a commission rate that high, you will attract more people who will want to sell your product. Affiliate marketing is very competitive. People aren’t going to want to put in the time and effort into promoting a product where they get very little return. So at the start, set your commission
level at 75%. You can always lower it as the product gains popularity.

So, just where and how do you find these people to sell your product? This is where things get a little tricky and you need to use a little brain power. As I said, this is a competitive industry. The people are out there, many are already involved in doing something. Perhaps they have their own Clickbank product. Maybe they’re selling products from
other marketplaces like Paydot.com. People aren’t just sitting around waiting for you to contact them with your request for them to become an affiliate. You’re going to have to do a little hunting.

The best way to find people to sell your product is to go to a search engine and simply type in “Clickbank Affiliate.” You’re going to find
a lot of listings. Many of these listings are going to take you to sites where, wait for it, people have set up entire pages JUST selling Clickbank products. If you’re lucky, somewhere on that page you will
find an email address. Simply write to the person, tell him that you have this brand new Clickbank product that is sure to take the world by storm. Tell him you’d like him to become an affiliate for the
product. Even offer to send him a copy for free. This is a great incentive and many people, once they see the value of the product, will jump right in and start selling it for you. If you happen to find
somebody who is a heavy hitter, one who makes lots of sales, this one person could very well make you very wealthy all by himself.

Of course, don’t neglect all the traditional methods of promotion, including safelists, message boards, classified ads, etc. It won’t happen overnight, but eventually you WILL find quite a few people who will turn your new product into a successful venture.

One of the easiest ways to get started marketing on the internet is through affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is sending leads to a sales page and getting paid for everyone of your leads that buy. But how do you select an affiliate product? How can you tell which affiliate products will sell and which won’t sell?
The process of choosing an affiliate program to become involved with is not as hard as it may seem as long as you know what to look for and what you want. You need to know how to search for affiliate programs and how to compare one to another.
The first thing you need to know before you pick an affiliate program is what market or what niche do you want to sell in. For example do you want to sell internet marketing information, self help information or gardening information?
There are so many products you can sell, you need to narrow you choice to start with by answering that question. You will be most likely to succeed in an area you either know something about or are interested in.
Once you pick your niche you are ready to start looking. The largest collection of information products with affiliate programs is Clickbank. There are thousands of products in dozens of categories and hundreds of sub categories listed for affiliates to choose from.
Go to Clickbank and look around a little bit to get a feel for the site and read some of the information about getting started. If you do not have a Clickbank account, you need to sign up for one. It is through this account that you will be paid, so it is important to sign up.
Once that is done go to Clickbank marketplace. There is a link to marketplace at the top of the main page. Marketplace is where you can search for affiliate programs. They are organized by categories which is why you need to have an idea about the market or niche you want to sell to ahead of time.
There is a simple search engine there that will allow you to search by category, keyword, and sub-category. Once you enter the search parameters the system lists your results. There are some statistics that are shown for all each of the results. The key ones are gravity, total earned per sale, percent earned per sale and percent of sales by affiliates.
The most important number is gravity. Gravity is a score that Clickbank assigns to each affiliate product according to their secret formula. It has to do with how many sales and how recently those sales have occurred.
Suffice to say that high gravity means that affiliates are making a lot of commissions on sales. Low gravity means that there has not been many sales at all. So the gravity is an important measure of how successful a product is.
You do not want to select the product with highest gravity because that also means that there will be the highest number of competitors selling that product. It would be very difficult for you start with a product that has so much competition.
You would be much better off looking for a product with a gravity somewhere between 75 and 150. That way you know that the product sells fairly well and you won’t have as much competition as the top products will have.
Once you find a number of products you might be interested in based on the gravity and category you can then start looking at the other factors such as total paid and percent paid. Always start with a good number of possibilities and narrow it down from there.
You can be more confident in picking the right affiliate product by understanding how to use the gravity numbers at Clickbank. That is a great start to picking your winning affiliate product.

There are several ways to advertise your blog, but what really can change its evolution is a good choice of affiliate programs. If you know how to value their true potential and optimize them for your blog’s features, the results can be stunning.
Usually, affiliate programs can bring multiple benefits if we compare then with other advertising methods. Choosing the product you want to promote through your affiliate programs is hard, if you consider the variety of products on the market. I will present you some of the choices you have, depending on what you are looking for your blog.
1. A great learning experience would be using Contextual Affiliate Products, by using programs like AdSense. This is a method that convinces the visitors to take action through the strong relation between the ad link of the product and the surrounding content. Therefore, when choosing the affiliate program for your blog make sure you match it with your topic. Try to determine the main elements that characterize your blog, such as the topic, the elements that attract the visitors or the products that could interest them if advertised on the blog. This will help you to understand better the mechanism of affiliate programs and the fact that not any topic is suited for an affiliate program. We recommend you not to use affiliate programs just for the sake of it. If so, you would better use some advertising methods.
2. Try to find a quality affiliate program, by considering the effect it could have on the reputation of your blog. The product you will choose represents a part of your blog and the visitors might like it or not. Therefore, pay attention and choose high quality products and websites, how you link to them and the programs behind those products, like Amazon.
3. Another thing to consider is the reader’s locations, especially if your site addresses to the visitors from a certain region. A clear example would be Amazon.com, that doesn’t need to ship the electronic products internationally.
4. Use tangible products especially if you try to optimize your products for the holiday season, when the visitors are more prone to purchase tangible products instead of downloadable ones.
Below are some affiliate programs you could use: Linkshare, Clickbank, Commision Junction and of course, Amazon.

In July 1996, Amazon.com started the Amazon Associates’ Program and set a whole new way of doing business in the web. This program allows qualified website owners from all over the world who take part in the program to earn a commission whenever they refer anyone to Amazon’s website that made a purchase. From then on, affiliate marketing has progress in an amazing speed. Today, when you receive information of products from internet marketers, you may also be invited to be part of their affiliate team as well.

The role of an affiliate is simply to help the product owner sell his product in exchange for a commission. You carry no stock and you are paid based on your performance. As an affiliate, your job is only to send interested buyers to the sales site. When you have successfully sent traffic to the sales site, your job ends there. The sales site will do the selling. You just need to do the pre-selling of the product. If any of those interested buyers you send to the sales site purchases a product, you will get your commission. One of the benefits of affiliate marketing is that you do not need to attend to customer service issues which can take up a lot of your time. The product owner will deal with the customer directly regarding any product issues.

Becoming an affiliate is very easy. You can join any affiliate program available in the internet. If you have a website of your own, you can place the promotional materials provided by the party offering the affiliate program in your website. It takes only a few minutes of your time to do this. However, if you do not own a website, you can still promote the product via pay-per-click program such as Overture and Google AdWords. Becoming part of an affiliate program is extremely simple, however, more work is required when promoting the products. There are usually thousands of affiliates promoting the same kind of product. It depends a lot on your marketing skills to compete effectively with the rest of them.

Some affiliate programs are run directly by the seller of the product while some of them are run by another party being considered as the third party. If the affiliate program is run by the seller of the product, then you will be dealing directly with the seller when you join the affiliate program. However, if the affiliate program is run by a third party, then you will not be dealing with the seller of the product when you join the program. The third party does not own or sell the product but just manages the affiliate program. It acts as the middle man and will take a percentage of your commission if a sale is made.

The frequency that you will get your commission depends on the program you join. Payment can be made to you on a bi-monthly basis, monthly basis or when a predetermined minimum amount is reached. The mode of payment depends on the program payment policy of the particular program you join. Payment can be made in the form of a check or credit directly into your PayPal account. In some programs, you will be asked to indicate your preferred choice of payment and you will be paid the way you want it.

If you are considering doing internet marketing, whether part-time or full-time, becoming an affiliate is the initial step to take. Being an affiliate will enable you to gain some first hand experience on what internet marketing is all about. Joining an affiliate program is simple. Most of the programs are free to join and some even provide training for new affiliates.
